The Interviews I Failed(2)

#HCL Infosystems Interview#

This is about the one of the finest interviews I have attended. It's about HCL Infosystems Interview procedure. It was an off-campus interview arranged in my college after my failure in Infosys and Hexaware interview. Thank god this was an opportunity to join an electronic business unit of HCL. There are 4 subsidiaries of HCL are into business (http://www.hcl.com/overview).  I surfed over to get all info. It was a fantastic interview until my HR lady probed me with questions, wait, let us slowly go to climax.

Introduction & Morning

As usual before the arrival of interviewing team I was in the hall with well ironed blue shirt and black pant. The interview team invaded the hall and left the silence as the sign of victory over our interview fear. They gave a humble and brief introduction about HCL enterprise. They beautified the stage with words and visuals about HCL.

After the introduction section, they asked us to share few points about HCL that impressed us. Ya, as I was determined to get into the company I grabbed the opportunity to make an impact and impress them. I explained about the 'Intrapreneurship' option in HCL and their 'Employee First' approach. Yes, as I expected I impressed them with data and my articulation. Another one girl explained about the presence of HCL in abroad. They are happy with our interactive discussion.

Then we moved to aptitude...

Written & Noon

Around noon, we gave our aptitude. The written round was a strange one for the people prepared with RS Agarwal. It's fully diagrammatic questions which required basic physics and common sense. As a happy end, most of us got selected (~90/280).

Discussion & Evening

Yes, that girl also selected, who replied the team in the morning. Selected were separated into 6 groups each containing 10 to 12 members.

This one was true group discussion rather than a Spoken English test which will be conducted in HCL B-serve and other technology-based companies. The arbiter clearly told us that he is going look for the confidence and value of the points setting aside the flow rate, accent, and grammar.

We were given with topic of 'Goods and Bads of Indian Education System'. I was about to open the discussion with an impressive introduction, but one fellow grabbed the momentum and opened up the discussion well. After keep on watching the quick mouths of my group I was the 5th person to join the discussion. That moment onwards whenever I got an opportunity, I stated my points firmly and politely. Finally, I got selected out of 40+.

That girl was not selected and she was in the group to which my bestie belongs to. My bestie told that she spoke well but gave wrong data over atom bombs.

Face to Face & Night

Everyone was hurrying through their technical books. The total room was in chaos. 'Hey, check the equation of second order differential equations' my another department buddy requested me. I said 'why you need it'. I replied 'They are asking it and they also asked the equation of a point, a line, a circle, and movement of  flying mosquito'. He added 'Even they are asking are you in love'. After all this nauseating comments, I immersed my head in a micro-controller book in order calm my nerves.

My turn, I went inside smiled them and got a welcoming smile. They said 'Please take your seat'. I sat comfortably by keeping my arms over the chair handles and slightly stretching myself against the chair then I handed over my resume to them. I introduced myself (with eye contacts) as I rehearsed. I explained my atmega8 microcontroller based project very well (Harvard Architecture, and a fine justification for sensors I used) as I prepared. They satisfied with my technical knowledge.

Billion Dollar HR Questions

A lady interviewer (HR), started to fire me with, 'Why you want to join HCL'. I replied 'I did research and found it as a good one... and... my senior who worked HCL also recommended me'[1a]. Then she probed more on my guru 'What was his position?'. I answered 'He was a java programmer at HCL'

She turned to my brother from the introduction of myself, and questioned 'What is your brother'. I said 'SQL programmer in so&so'. She hit back me with next question 'How long you will stay in HCL if selected'. I was joyous with the positive question I got, without any hesitation and condition I said 'I think 4 years'. She asked 'How can you be so sure'. 'HCL is good company and I will get a good opportunity so I can stay up to 4 years'. A blunder mistake I have not thought of appraisal problems or any other at that time and gave an absolute number.

Finally, she hit the hammer on my head, 'How can I be sure that you will not leave the company if you're brother offers a referral in a better company'. I started to think as I have not expected this kind of situation in future. At last to grip the opportunity I said, 'Decision over the job is mine... brother's suggestion will be next... and I hope HCL will provide good environment'.

Successfully Failed

At last just a few tens of minutes to midnight, they announced the result, am not selected yet my bestie got selected thank god at least he was into HCL from my class.

FOOTNOTES

Do preparation for all the rounds. Visualize real-time problems and your response to it. Be firm with your answers in HR round with your past actions to support your decision or explain your decision and the factors you considered in making decisions.

In GD always try to extend the discussion within the topic. Give real-time examples. Make sure that you don't interrupt others or raise your voice. Just state the pros and cons of a given topic but make it firm and polite. Even if you're telling one point only, make sure that it reaches all.
